about

To say that The White Octave play from the heart is cliche. The White Octave's sound is too big, too rock for that. Rather, they work from the gut...with a fire they've managed to package into a cathartic tide of anthemic rock. Backing up the blazing guitar lines, pummeling bass and explosive drumming is intelligence and pop sensibility. Their debut Style No. 6312 takes a giant step toward merging the ambitious dynamics of post-hardcore with the resonant delivery of the rock song. Stephen Pedersen (former guitarist of Midwestern tour de force Cursive from 1992 to 1998) has truly come into his own as a songwriter. Plaintive, yet forceful and full of conviction, The White Octave leaves even the most complacent listener unhinged. Raw and immediate, yet subtle and sonically diverse, they march full steam ahead, unstoppable, holding nothing back...offering incredible songwriting that in one word, goes "crunch." The White Octave appears on Emo Diaries 5 with an unreleased song "Looking Past Sky." (DER-394)

"I kid you not when I say Style No. 6312 is superb...great and passionate off-kilter rock that absolutely brings to mind Archers of Loaf when they were at their peak, combined with the power and stylings of At The Drive In and a small helping of early Superchunk. The tracks that won me over are 'Adult Entertainment' with its pummeling, almost Big Black styled bass sound, and 'Devise Executes' that builds up like no other - but hey kid, don't get me wrong, the rest of this album is pretty much where it's at as well - forty minutes of genius would not be an understatement. Maybe the best Deep Elm release since Appleseed Cast's 'Mare Vitalis' - and that is high praise indeed." - Fracture

"The White Octave do what so few bands have been able to do on Style No. 6312; they successfully fuse the urgency and vitality of punk rock with pop melodies and interesting arrangements. Sounding at times like a cross between Superchunk and The Jesus Lizard, their guttural sound also recalls such innovators as Barkmarket. Producer / engineer Bob Weston does an expert job in capturing the dirt and dirge of Devise Executes and Crossing The Rubicon, as well as the surprisingly tender passages of Appeals For Insertion." - Exclaim

"The best thing about The White Octave is their lack of categorization. The new jazz, anti-pop construction of each song moves with a confidence and inventive touch, getting your attention and actually inviting you to take a chance and get lost in the short, glorious soundscapes of each song. 'Call The Kiss' melds into a chorus of heartaching / breaking moments of perfect regret in lyric form. "No Resolution Theory' is a slow delve into the further reaches, with clangy bass lines that explodes into pure wailing bliss, making it seem epochal in a fairly epical album. Not that the girth of The White Octave insists hugeness or a stadium, but there is no denying that their sound is smart and asks us to be so as well, which is why this may be the underground cool you have been hunting for." - Skratch

"The White Octave have a uniquely brilliant take on life's excruciatingly awkward instances, giving Style No. 6312 a uniquely haunting attraction. The lyrics on Style No. 6312 come crashing through like some assailant's dagger and bleed into your brain. It only takes one listen for the melodies to embed themselves in your mind and leave you humming and singing lyrics that you will undoubtedly remember. A ferociously confident rhythm section and blistering guitar riffs, soft achy vocals that occasionally go on tandem jump scream sessions all add up the the Octave's musical style that is so refreshingly honest, it can't be flawed." - Salt For Slugs

Track Name: Appeals For Insertion
i'm not waiting around. you have opened the door. waiting for nothing more. no more touring around. but it keeps my nights full. no more nights with no encore. this salt in wound scenario is growing old. but i'm protected by a thousand layers of built-up skin. designed to protect what you've destroyed within. i'm not waiting around. you have opened the door. waiting for nothing more. no more touring around. but it keeps my nights full. no more night with just us four. this salt in wound scenario is growing old. and all i have to show for it is scars. just promise that you will always be the one. who talks when i refuse to speak. just let me miss
Track Name: Crashing The Clarion
weight is now on the audience. when i carry this load. it means i break through to the sound. songs sent by new agents. some sort of message is sent. but it never breaks through. spies looking for sound. severed by noise into presence and waves. you say i won't turn away. bleeding the sun for the plans that you've made on this sound. start crashing the clarion. dissecting their every-made move. but i will push through to sound. enter the code again. electric channels shut down. to crash all the sound into waves. a shift takes place. mixing the mud to create machines in machines. cries looking for ears. designed to be noise but in the end it rescinds. down to shocks and blips on a screen. i shot today. hurray hurray for me. and it may take some time to believe what you say. while i'm losing this game i don't want to play. and the subject survives because you give it weight. while i'm still losing this game i don't want to play. i don't want to play. weight is now on the audience. when i carry this load it means i break through
Track Name: Devise Executes
corrected for the first time. where do you think this moves us. respect begins with knowledge but you don't want to learn. what i devise executes in front of me. but i'm so uninspired by this. so i leave. it's not that i can't speak to you. it's just words won't commence. so many times presumption has gotten the best of me. but it's okay to sink. some say that it's just like a lie that turns true. you don't see that i'm so uninspired by you. so i leave. it's not that i'm that lonely. it's more like i need someone to hear. so you say. that it's just like a lie that turns true. you don't see. that i am so uninspired by you. so i leave

Track Name: Call The Kiss
under stars. i watch the sky. as night consumes the daylight. and i recall the sweetest dreams. but red wine helps them fade. here's to another glass. i need it to displace. the emptiness i cannot swallow. i tried to cleanse these guilty hands. but the stains they won't leave. i tried to rush to your defense. but i tripped on my weak words. don't terrorize. my senseless whines will fade. my eyes complain. my mouth stays shut. i leave you in your bed. i pulled your teeth. to hear the truth. the truth is it still kills me to this day. but don't terrorize. my senseless whines will fade. into another glass. it's too soon for today. today i feel about okay. i wait for these nights to come to an end. so i can feel at home. i tried to rush to your defense. but these guilty hands they shake. don't terrorize. my senseless whines will fade. if i could split my heart in two. i'd give the beating half to you. if these words never rise above us. i swear i'd slit my wrists for you. if life becomes so cold and dim. that to breathe is to live. then i'll breathe for you. but i won't repent. i won't repent for what i did to make this break. here's to another glass. i need it to replace the emptiness. i cannot take away

Track Name: Adult Entertainment
i think you should know. we're uninvited. i think we should go. so don't get excited. don't get excited. but i can give them what they want. i know it's entertainment. save it up for another day. i try to leave but you follow me. you break my mind in a subtle way. i guess i'm just a casualty of entertainment. don't tell me i shrug my shoulders. even atlas lost his balance. but i can give them what they want. i know it's entertainment. save it up for another day. i try to leave but you follow me. you break my mind in a subtle way. i guess i'm just a casualty
Track Name: Crossing The Rubicon
stayed and slow the truth takes time to show. who's here to stay. played with force their egos clash in a wave of useless sound. you don't know what you deserve. and all i can say that it's not me baby. you can sell yourself somewhere else. these chords chew slowly through your heart. concentrate and it just might happen for you. surrender your loyalties to me. slaves. we destroy what we have created. till it all comes back to you with you were wrong. you don't know what you have earned. but it's not me baby. you can sell yourself somewhere else. these chords chew slowly through your heart. concentrate and it just might happen for you. surrender your apologies to me
Track Name: No Resolution Theory
mistaking your drunken flirtations. for something more than that. but it's just a healthy temptation. that keeps me coming back. and the light that you receive. is nothing more than the light you give to me. when it's fate that guides. the soul lives in its shadow. in this salacious lie. we learn to forget the patterns of the stars. you're dressed for success this time. not that it matters. you only get one try. then it goes away. don't pretend to be just watching. it's okay. it's okay to touch. and the light that you receive. is nothing more than the light you give to me. when it's fate that guides. the soul lives in its shadow. in this salacious lie. we learn to forget the patterns of. the stars in the sky. all becomes a unified light for you. you're dressed for success this time. not that it matters. you only get one try. then it goes away
Track Name: This Is Not A Subsistence Existence
at times it's best not to think in words. but this is not a subsistence existence. those who grow alone give up
Track Name: South
delayed like a caesarean baby. i'm owned till i split from this shell. reigned over like mignons and pupils. i barely breathe for myself. so where are your engines. where are your servants. they've dethroned you with cold stares. and last and least it's your only invention. but your creation has gone stale. show me you defuse. and i'll break you down with light. you can't sell your own worth back to me. but you tell me your confused. and i prove it is a lie. you can't sell your own worth back to me. hurray it's your own bastille day. freedom rings in my ears like the band. weight transfers quickly from my hands. and the shoulders i lean upon. show me your confused. and i'll prove it is a lie. you can't sell your prideless self this time. show me your defused. and i'll prove it is a lie. you can't sell your own worth back to me

Track Name: Style No. 6312
in the rain. i see your makeup. slowly dissolving on your cheek. in a way. you're like a circle. constant and closed off from me. it's time that i wrote this song. it's about you. i surrender to you. in the wake of the conversation. i'm devoted to you. i surrender to you. and i claim this to be the first day. i can wake up without you in my head. so we play songs of disaster. but the tone of the music will change. it's time that i wrote this song. it's about you. i surrender to you. in the wake of conversations. i'm devoted to you. i surrender to you. i lost you. i lost you. i lost you dear
